A MAJOR flaw in one of Britain’s most commonly used door locks leaves millions of homes wide open to burglars, it was revealed yesterday.

A master locksmith says he warned police and manufacturers last September about the ease with which Euro-profile locks can be sprung.

Anyone can break the locks, which are most commonly used in PVCu and patio doors, using a simple method which takes less than five seconds.

The weakness has been known about by some manufacturers since the lock was devised in Germany in 1923.

The problem has been addressed across Europe, but 22 million doors across Britain are still vulnerable to the simplest form of attack.

Mr XXXXXXXX, who has worked in the trade for 25 years, demonstrated the method yesterday, breaking a lock using the simplest of tools with frightening ease.

All police forces are now being told of the method, but are keeping it a closely guarded secret to avoid a chaotic open season for burglars.

Mr XXXXXXXX, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, said: ‘This is a ticking time bomb and something must be done quickly. We have to be one step ahead of the burglars-but by definition that means they are only one step behind us’.

The locks were made in Germany to Danish specifications and are now used around the globe. But Mr XXXXXXXX’s research, conducted while recuperating at home, threw up worrying results.

He said: ‘I noticed an article about a spate of burglaries in West Yorkshire while I was recovering from my heart operation and started looking into it’.

‘It soon became obvious that there was a gaping flaw which has been addressed in Germany and Holland but not here’.

Mr XXXXXXXX said some criminals already know of the method and called for urgent action to correct the problem.

Senior Northumbria police officers were given a demonstration by Mr XXXXXXXX of his discovery.

Assistant Chief Constable XXXX XXXXX said: ‘We are not aware of a particular problem of crimes being committed in the Northumbria area by people using this method to gain entry to properties. There’s been a dramatic fall in house burglaries in our force area, with offences falling 20 per cent in the nine months to the end of December 2005’.

‘This issue was originally raised in the West Yorkshire area and we are aware of some concerns, however British Standards and commercial companies are seeking to market solutions and this is being managed by the industry’.

‘We would question the responsibility of demonstrating any particular security weakness which could raise the fear of crime and provide the opportunities for criminals to commit offences’.

A Home Office spokesman said: ‘The risk of being burgled remains at its lowest in 20 years’.

‘But we are not complacent, there is still much to do to keep burglary levels down and drive them down further in highest crime areas’.

This article was taken from a major newspaper on Saturday 18th February 2006.

BREAK SECURE DOOR CYLINDER

· The Break Secure door cylinder is produced from a hardened metal, with anti-drill pins at both ends of the cylinder.

· Each end of the cylinder is fitted with specialist snapping sections which break away in such a way that the burglar won’t be able to reach the cylinder after the initial attack.

· The seven pins in the cylinder, including the unique pin belonging to our specialist manufacturers, mean that the Break Secure door cylinder cannot be picked, or bumped.

· If the Break Secure door cylinder has been attacked, the cylinder will still remain operable, meaning you are able to lock and un-lock your door, despite the attempted break-in.

· Our registered key system means that you the homeowner/key-holder, are the only person/s are able to obtain copies via your own unique security code number.

· The Break Secure door cylinder is fitted on all our doors as standard, combating the easiest method of break-in.

· Important to know: The Break Secure door cylinder can be retro-fitted to any PVCu door, or any other type of door which incorporated the Euro-profile cylinder design! Contact us for more details and cost information.

· Beware! Our version is called the Integrator. There is a cheaper version of this cylinder, called the Garrison, on the market which doesn’t have a unique pin which guards against bumping and does not have a true registered key system, which means Garrison keys can be cut anywhere, by anybody!
